We saw a beautiful bright green critter it is called the bright green Luna moth. The grub making its way through our yard.
The moths are admired for their beauty and are regarded as some of the most remarkable moths in North America.
These moths with scientific name, Actias luna, are commonly located in forested regions and are nocturnally active.
We just learned about that their lengthy twisted tails are an adaptation that help them avoid being eaten by bats, which we have plenty of in our neighborhood.
The way they flit, and spin will actually scatter a bat's sonar signals and give them a bit of an edge when it comes to evasion.
Apparently, they don't live too long (a single week once emerging from cocoon).
Have you seen Bright Green Luna Moth in Nature?

ReplyDeleteLuna moths, with their stunning beauty, truly are some of the most remarkable moths in North America. Their elegance in the forested regions and their nocturnal activity make them a fascinating subject. The fact that their lengthy, twisted tails are an adaptation to avoid predation by bats is absolutely intriguing. It's amazing how nature equips these delicate creatures with such ingenious methods of survival. The way they flit and spin to scatter a bat's sonar signals is not only a brilliant evolutionary trait but also a testament to the incredible resilience and adaptability of these moths.

The holidays are almost over. We have been looking forward to Christmas for so long with lots of preparations, crafting, writing cards, decorating the house and of course the obligatory baking and cooking of cookies. Now we are looking forward to the new year. What will 2025 bring?
